It's Official: MEGADETH Will Continue
October 9, 2005MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine announced at the end of the band's headlining performance in Buenos Aires, Argentina Sunday night (October 9) that the group will continue to record and tour under the name MEGADETH. "I told you earlier tonight that I was gonna let all of you know first before the rest of the world what our decision was — whether or not we were gonna continue with MEGADETH or not," Mustaine said before launching into a special rendition of the band's track "Coming Home", with the song's lyrics changed from the original "I'm coming home to Arizona" to "I'm coming home to Argentina." He then followed it up by saying, "The answer is yes." Download an audio recording of the announcement (including the song "Coming Home") at this location.
Mustaine had previously told Launch Radio Networks he originally planned MEGADETH's 2004 album, "The System Has Failed", as a solo outing, but used the band name for contractual reasons. After releasing the album under the MEGADETH name, he contemplated ending the group in favor of a solo career, but started having second thoughts after spending most of the last year touring with the band's current lineup, which includes bassist James MacDonough (ex-ICED EARTH),drummer Shawn Drover (EIDOLON) and guitarist Glen Drover (EIDOLON). "I still was convinced that this was gonna be the last MEGADETH record," he said. "But, you know, after going out and touring and having these new, wonderful people I'm playing with and this whole new administration that I'm part of, it's just given me a huge, very uncomfortable question mark. Do I go out on top — because MEGADETH certainly is at the top of its form right now — or do I throw the dice again?"
MEGADETH are in the middle of a South American tour in support of "The System Has Failed", which came out in September 2004. The latest MEGADETH release, "Greatest Hits: Back to the Start" (Capitol),entered the Billboard chart at No. 65 and has sold 95,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
